Cheating and lying can take many forms. They may involve infidelity, hidden behavior, false accusations, dishonest business practices, or smaller deceptions that gradually damage trust.
The Bible does not treat every form of cheating as one category. Instead, Scripture speaks about adultery, false witness, dishonest gain, deception, truthfulness, and faithfulness. Together, these passages show that honesty involves more than avoiding obvious lies. Biblical integrity means dealing truthfully with others even when deception may seem easier.
These 21 Bible verses about cheating and lying explore what Scripture says about dishonesty, betrayal, repentance, and rebuilding a life around truth.

What Does the Bible Say About Cheating and Lying?
The Bible consistently condemns deception because it harms relationships and allows one person to gain something through falsehood. Scripture also presents faithfulness as the better alternative.
Some passages address lying directly. Others concern adultery, fraudulent dealing, or dishonesty in everyday choices.
1. Do Not Deal Falsely
You shall not steal; you shall not deal falsely; you shall not lie to one another.Leviticus 19:11 (ESV)
Leviticus places stealing, false dealing, and lying beside one another. Dishonesty is not limited to saying something untrue. It also includes acting deceptively toward another person.
The command appears within instructions about how the Israelites were to treat their neighbors. A person could not claim to live faithfully while gaining an advantage through deceit.
Modern forms of cheating often fit this same principle. Whether the deception involves money, promises, or relationships, someone is being denied the truth.
2. God Values Faithfulness
Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord,
but those who act faithfully are his delight.Proverbs 12:22 (ESV)
This proverb contrasts lying with faithfulness. The opposite of deception is not simply factual accuracy. Scripture points toward becoming someone whose words and actions can be trusted.
Repeated lying damages more than one conversation. Over time, it can make another person question everything else that has been said.

Bible Verses About Lying and Deception
Lying receives direct attention throughout Scripture. Some passages focus on truthful speech, while others show how deception damages people and communities.
3. Speak the Truth
ย Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.Ephesians 4:25 (ESV)
Paul presents truthful speech as part of changed Christian conduct. Falsehood is something believers are called to put away.
He also gives a relational reason for honesty. We are connected to one another. A lie can therefore influence another personโs decisions, expectations, or understanding of what is really happening.
4. Leave the Old Lies
Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old selfย with its practices 10ย and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.Colossians 3:9โ10 (ESV)
In Colossians, lying belongs to the โold selfโ that believers are told to leave behind.
The image suggests more than apologizing for an isolated falsehood. Real change means abandoning deceptive habits rather than returning to them whenever honesty becomes uncomfortable.
5. Lies Do Not Last
Truthful lips endure forever,
but a lying tongue is but for a moment.Proverbs 12:19 (ESV)
A lie may seem useful for a while. It can hide a mistake, protect a secret, or create the impression someone wants another person to believe.
Proverbs looks beyond that short-term advantage. Truth has a durability that deception lacks. Lies often require more lies to keep them alive, while truth does not need the same structure of concealment around it.
6. False Witness Has Consequences
A false witness will not go unpunished,
and he who breathes out lies will not escape.Proverbs 19:5 (ESV)
A false witness is someone who gives dishonest testimony, potentially damaging another personโs reputation, property, or freedom.
The wider principle applies whenever someone knowingly misrepresents another person. Lies about others can spread far beyond the moment in which they are spoken.
7. Deception Can Wound
A man who bears false witness against his neighbor
is like a war club, or a sword, or a sharp arrow.Proverbs 25:18 (ESV)
Proverbs compares false testimony with weapons capable of causing physical harm.
The image is severe because dishonest words can damage reputations, friendships, families, and communities. A lie does not become harmless simply because no physical force was used.
Bible Verses About Cheating in Relationships
When people search for Bible verses about cheating, they are often thinking about romantic or marital infidelity.
Scripture usually discusses this through adultery, sexual immorality, desire, marriage, and faithfulness.
8. Honor the Marriage Covenant
Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.Hebrews 13:4 (ESV)
Hebrews treats marriage as worthy of honor and directly condemns adultery. The verse makes marital faithfulness part of honoring the covenant itself. Infidelity is therefore not presented as a private mistake with no wider significance.
Some readers may be here because they cheated. Others may be trying to understand betrayal committed against them. In either case, the biblical standard remains faithfulness.
9. Do Not Commit Adultery
You shall not commit adultery.Exodus 20:14 (ESV)
The seventh commandment is brief and direct. Adultery violates the exclusivity expected within marriage. Scripture does not redefine it as acceptable because a relationship has become difficult, distant, or unhappy.
The simplicity of the command keeps the issue from disappearing beneath complicated justifications.
10. Adultery Brings Destruction
He who commits adultery lacks sense;
ย ย ย ย he who does it destroys himself.
He will get wounds and dishonor,
ย ย ย ย and his disgrace will not be wiped away.Proverbs 6:32โ33 (ESV)
Proverbs 6 warns about adultery by emphasizing its destructive consequences.
Sexual betrayal can affect far more than the two people directly involved. A marriage, children, finances, friendships, emotional security, and personal reputation may all be affected.
The passage does not mean that someone who committed adultery can never change. Its warning is that infidelity carries consequences that temptation often hides.
11. Faithfulness Begins Within
โYou have heard that it was said, โYou shall not commit adultery.โ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.Matthew 5:27-28 (ESV)
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus moves beyond the outward act of adultery and addresses deliberate lustful intent.
He is not saying that merely noticing another person is identical to adultery. The teaching concerns what someone willingly cultivates inwardly.
Betrayal often begins before another person discovers it. Jesus calls attention to integrity before the visible boundary has already been crossed.
Bible Verses About Dishonest Gain and Unfair Advantage
Cheating is not limited to relationships. People also cheat through money, business, agreements, schoolwork, competitions, and everyday exchanges.
Scripture frequently addresses this kind of dishonesty through warnings about false measures and unjust gain.
12. Use Honest Measures
A false balance is an abomination to the Lord,
but a just weight is his delight.Proverbs 11:1ย (ESV)
In the ancient marketplace, dishonest weights allowed someone to manipulate a transaction without the other person realizing it.
This makes Proverbs 11:1 one of Scriptureโs clearest examples of cheating for material advantage.
Modern methods have changed, but the principle remains. Falsifying numbers, hiding important information, or manipulating an agreement depends on someone else not knowing the truth.
13. Integrity Shows in Small Things
One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.Luke 16:10 (ESV)
This verse appears after Jesusโ parable of the dishonest manager and within teaching about stewardship.
The context matters here. Jesus is not simply encouraging people to work hard at small tasks, but he is drawing attention to faithfulness and dishonesty in what someone has been entrusted with.
Small acts of cheating matter because character does not suddenly appear only when the stakes are large.
14. Dishonest Gain Turns Bitter
Bread gained by deceit is sweet to a man,
but afterward his mouth will be full of gravel.Proverbs 20:17 (ESV)
Dishonesty can feel rewarding at first. Someone gets the money, answer, opportunity, or advantage they wanted.
Proverbs looks at what happens afterward. What seemed profitable may become difficult to live with once guilt, mistrust, or consequences arrive.
15. Walk Securely With Integrity
Whoever walks in integrity walks securely,
but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out.Proverbs 10:9 (ESV)
Integrity creates a kind of security because there is less to hide.
Someone living deceptively must remember who knows what, which details have been concealed, and whether different stories might eventually conflict.
Honesty does not guarantee an easy life, but it removes the instability created by maintaining deception.
Bible Verses About Truth and Faithfulness
Scripture does more than tell people to stop lying. It presents truth, fairness, and faithfulness as positive qualities worth developing.
16. Speak Truth to Others
These are the things that you shall do: Speak the truth to one another; render in your gates judgments that are true and make for peace;Zechariah 8:16 (ESV)
Zechariah places truth alongside justice and peace within the community.
Honesty is therefore not merely a private virtue. Truth helps create relationships in which people can deal fairly with one another.
Where deception becomes normal, trust becomes difficult. Where truth is expected, people have a stronger foundation for resolving conflict.
17. Love Rejoices With Truth
it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.1 Corinthians 13:6 (ESV)
First Corinthians 13 is often associated with romantic love, but Paulโs words reach further.
Love and truth belong together.
Someone may justify hiding the truth by saying they wanted to protect another person. Yet concealment can also prevent that person from understanding what is actually happening and making informed choices.
Biblical love does not require harshness, but neither does it build relationships on deliberate falsehood.
18. Integrity Gives Direction
The integrity of the upright guides them,
but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them.Proverbs 11:3 (ESV)
Integrity changes the question behind a moral decision. Instead of asking, โCan I get away with this?โ a person begins asking whether the action is honest.
That principle can guide choices long before someone reaches an obvious crisis. Integrity is often formed in ordinary moments when deception would have been easier.
Bible Verses About Repentance After Lying or Cheating
Some readers may be here because someone deceived them. Others may be searching because they were the person who lied or cheated.
Scripture takes wrongdoing seriously, but it also leaves room for repentance.
19. Confess What Happened
ย If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.1 John 1:9 (ESV)
First John connects confession with Godโs forgiveness and cleansing.
Confession requires honesty about wrongdoing instead of continuing to disguise or justify it. For someone who has lied or cheated, this is especially important because deception cannot genuinely be abandoned while the deception itself is still being protected.
Forgiveness also does not mean consequences automatically disappear. Trust may need time to recover, and some consequences may remain.
The verse offers hope without pretending the wrongdoing was harmless.
20. Stop Hiding the Wrong
Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper,
but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.Proverbs 28:13 (ESV)
This proverb contrasts concealing sin with confessing and forsaking it.
An apology without change can become part of a repeating cycle. Biblical repentance involves turning away from what has been confessed.
For someone who has been deceived, changed behavior can therefore matter just as much as words of regret.
21. Turn Back
Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out,Acts 3:19 (ESV)
Peterโs call to repentance in Acts 3 is broader than lying or infidelity, but it provides an appropriate final passage because repentance involves turning.
Someone who has built part of life around deception does not have to continue in the same direction. Turning back may require admitting what happened, surrendering an unfair advantage, accepting consequences, or changing behavior that has become habitual.
Repentance does not rewrite the past. It changes the direction of what comes next.
When Trust Has Been Broken
Discovering that someone has lied or cheated can make earlier conversations feel uncertain. A person may wonder which memories were genuine, how long the deception lasted, or whether anything else remains hidden.
The Bibleโs condemnation of dishonesty means those concerns should not be dismissed simply because forgiveness is also a biblical theme. Forgiveness does not require treating betrayal as insignificant.
Scripture repeatedly places responsibility on the person who practiced deception and calls them toward confession, faithfulness, and changed conduct.
At the same time, forgiveness and immediate restoration of trust are not identical. Trust is often rebuilt through consistent honesty after the truth becomes known.
Someone facing a serious marital or relational crisis may also need support beyond a collection of Bible verses. Pastoral guidance or professional counseling may be appropriate depending on the situation.
Choosing Truth After Deception
The Bible speaks about cheating and lying in different settings because dishonesty itself takes different forms. Adultery violates marital faithfulness. False testimony harms others through untruth. Fraud gains an advantage that was not honestly earned. Repeated lies gradually weaken trust.
Across those differences, one theme remains consistent. Scripture calls people toward truth and faithfulness.
For someone who has been betrayed, these passages affirm that deception is not trivial. For someone who has been dishonest, they also show that confession and repentance offer a way to stop protecting the lie and begin living differently.
Complete honesty may be uncomfortable, especially after trust has already been damaged. Yet continuing the deception asks everyone involved to make future decisions based on something that is not true.
What would choosing complete honesty look like in the situation you are facing now?
