Elon Musk thinks AI could surpass humanityโ€™s combined intelligence within about five years and help reshape daily life by 2036. In a 2026 interview with The Economist, he predicted an economy driven by AI and robots, where work could be optional, and money could play a much smaller role.

At the same time, Musk has not abandoned his concerns about AI safety. His current view mixes optimism with caution. He sees rapid AI progress as hard to stop, so the question is shifting from whether it will happen to what kind of future it might create.

What Does Elon Musk Think About AI Today?

Musk is hardly watching the AI race from the sidelines. Through xAI, Grok, Teslaโ€™s autonomous systems, and the companyโ€™s work on Optimus humanoid robots, he has placed himself inside the technological shift he is trying to predict.

For years, Musk was one of the loudest public figures warning that advanced artificial intelligence could threaten humanity. Those concerns have not disappeared. However, his 2026 interview suggests that he now sees rapid AI development as increasingly difficult to stop.

Instead of focusing mainly on whether humanity should slow AI down, Musk spends much of the conversation asking what happens if progress continues at its current pace. His answer is surprisingly hopeful.

Musk estimates that artificial intelligence could exceed the combined intelligence of humanity in roughly five years. He goes further, suggesting that there may eventually be little AI cannot do better than humans, apart from simply being human.

That last idea is easy to overlook when predictions about superintelligence grab the headlines. Yet it raises one of the interviewโ€™s most interesting questions. If intelligence, productivity, calculation, and technical skill are no longer uniquely human strengths, where will human value come from?

Musk does not offer a complete answer. Instead, he turns to what such powerful intelligence might allow us to produce.

Muskโ€™s predictions make more sense when we treat them as one connected argument rather than a list of futuristic claims.

First comes artificial intelligence that can outperform people across a wide range of tasks. Next comes robotics, which gives that intelligence the ability to work outside a screen and interact with the physical world.

From there, Musk imagines a far more productive economy.

The word โ€œabundanceโ€ carries much of his argument.

AI can already produce information, software, images, analysis, and other digital output. Musk believes humanoid robots could extend those abilities into factories, homes, construction sites, transportation, and other forms of physical work.

In his view, digital intelligence paired with physical machines could produce goods and services on a scale that todayโ€™s human workforce cannot match.

That leads directly to two of his boldest predictions.

Why Work Could Be Optional

When Musk says people may no longer need to work, he does not picture humanity sitting around with nothing to do.

Instead, he compares future employment with something people already choose to do even when they do not need to.

โ€œI think work is going to be optional. I think maybe a good comparison would be gardening.โ€

His gardening example is simple. Most people do not need to grow vegetables at home because they can buy better-looking produce at a store. Still, plenty of people garden because they enjoy the process, take pride in what they grow, or like sharing it with others.

Musk imagines work following a similar path.

People might still write, build, teach, design, compete, experiment, or start businesses even if machines could do those tasks more efficiently. The difference is that earning a living would no longer be the main reason to do them.

That sounds freeing, but it also raises a harder question. Work currently gives many people routine, social connection, identity, status, and a sense of contribution. Removing the need to earn an income does not automatically tell us what should replace those things.

Perhaps that is one of the stranger possibilities in Muskโ€™s future. Technology might solve the question of how we make a living before we have answered what we want to live for.

Why Musk Thinks Money Could Lose Its Importance

If machines can provide most of what people need, Musk argues that money itself could play a much smaller role. He even puts a date on that prediction.

His reasoning starts with a practical question. Why do we want money?

For most people, the answer includes housing, food, transportation, entertainment, healthcare, and other goods or services. Musk argues that if AI and robots can produce those things in quantities far beyond demand, scarcity could fall enough that earning money to access them becomes less important.

His logic follows a clear chain.

More advanced AI leads to more capable robots. Those robots increase production. Higher production reduces scarcity. If scarcity falls far enough, work and money start to serve different purposes.

The difficult word, of course, is if.

The Difficult Part Is Getting From Here to There

Muskโ€™s 2036 vision is easy to picture as a polished science-fiction future. The interview gets more interesting when the discussion turns to the road between today and that destination.

Musk admits the transition could be rough.

โ€œI do think itโ€™s going to be a bumpy road, because AI will be able to do any job better than any person can do that job.โ€

Digital jobs could feel the effects first because AI already works naturally through computers and phones. Musk points to software development as one field where capability is moving quickly.

Physical labor presents a different challenge. AI may know how to perform a task, but replacing physical work also requires robots that can move through messy real-world spaces, handle objects, adapt to problems, and operate cheaply enough to deploy at scale.

That is an important distinction. A powerful AI model is not the same as a robot capable of replacing millions of workers.

There is also the question of who owns the machines and who receives the benefits.

Musk imagines huge increases in production eventually supporting very high incomes or reducing the need for conventional income. Yet greater productivity does not guarantee that everyone gets equal access to what those machines produce.

A recent Forbes analysis of Muskโ€™s 2036 prediction points to another complication. Even if AI makes many goods much cheaper, land, energy, unique locations, finite resources, and ownership can still remain scarce.

That does not prove Muskโ€™s forecast wrong. However, it shows how much would have to change between cheaper intelligence and a world where money has little use.

Throughout the interview, this tension keeps returning. Musk describes the destination with confidence, while the route there looks much less certain.

What Would Have to Go Right?

For Muskโ€™s 2036 vision to arrive close to his timeline, several huge pieces would need to fall into place.

Artificial intelligence would first need to outperform people across most useful tasks. Humanoid robots would then have to turn that intelligence into reliable physical work on a massive scale.

Those systems would also require huge amounts of computing power, electricity, infrastructure, and manufacturing capacity. Then comes the human side.

Societies would need ways to share the gains from automation while helping people adapt to changes in jobs and income. Governments would need to respond to disruption without blocking useful innovation. At the same time, AI systems would have to remain safe enough that increased production does not bring risks nobody can control.

Musk may be confident about the destination, but even his own argument shows how difficult the journey could be.

Has Elon Musk Changed His Mind About AI Risk?

This may be the most revealing part of the interview.

Muskโ€™s older comments about AI often focused on existential risk. He warned about rapid self-improvement, supported calls to slow advanced AI development, and argued that poorly controlled systems could pose serious danger.

The 2026 Musk does not dismiss those fears. Instead, his response to them seems to have shifted.

He tells The Economist that AI and robotics still carry risk, but he no longer sees an obvious way to stop their progress. His position now sounds closer to accepting the direction of travel while trying to reduce the chance of a disastrous outcome.

Musk even reflects on the irony that some of his own choices may have accelerated the AI race he once wanted to approach more carefully. His involvement in founding OpenAI, followed by the rise of more competing labs, helped create an increasingly crowded field.

At this stage, his philosophy seems less focused on stopping advanced intelligence and more focused on the values that intelligence should have.

โ€œI think what we can and should try to do is make sure that the AI has good values, that it cares about humanity and that it wants us to be happy and prosper. The most important thing for AI safety is to be maximally truth-seeking and curious.โ€

That gives his AI concerns a different focus. The question is not only whether machines grow extremely intelligent. It is whether their goals, values, and view of reality remain compatible with human well-being.

Musk also proposes a more practical safety step. He suggests that leading AI companies could test one anotherโ€™s most advanced models shortly before release. Competitors could flag serious safety or security problems. If a company refused to address a major danger, governments could then step in.

It is far less dramatic than stopping AI development altogether, but it fits his current outlook.

The race may continue. The challenge is making sure it heads somewhere humanity actually wants to go.

What Happens to Human Purpose in Muskโ€™s AI Future?

Musk spends much of the interview describing what machines may one day do for us. Yet the most interesting part of his prediction may be what humans are left to choose for ourselves.

If AI can perform nearly every useful economic task, work may no longer shape adult life in the way it does today. If robots can provide abundant goods and services, earning and spending may take up less of our attention.

That gives people more freedom, but freedom does not arrive with instructions.

We would still need relationships, ambitions, communities, challenges, creativity, play, and reasons to get up in the morning. Perhaps people would work because they wanted to rather than because rent was due. Human-made objects might even gain value because someone chose to make them when a machine could have done it faster.

Muskโ€™s gardening comparison hints at this possibility. An imperfect tomato grown by a friend can feel more meaningful than the flawless one at a store, not because it is better in economic terms but because someone chose to grow it.

His comment about AI doing almost everything better โ€œapart from being humanโ€ starts to feel more important here.

Efficiency is not the only way we decide what has value.

A conversation, handmade gift, difficult personal goal, song, or afternoon spent teaching someone may still feel worthwhile even if an AI could produce a technically better result.

Muskโ€™s future therefore raises a question technology cannot answer for us. If necessity takes up less of our time, we still have to decide what deserves the time we get back.

A Future That Is Still a Prediction

Elon Muskโ€™s boldest AI prediction may not be that machines will surpass human intelligence. It is what he thinks comes afterward. In his 2036 vision, AI and robots produce so much that work shifts from necessity toward choice and money plays a smaller role. Whether that happens in ten years, fifty years, or not at all depends on far more than smarter software.

But if machines eventually outperform us at nearly everything we once had to do, how will we decide what is still worth doing ourselves?
