The most famous Green Goblin quotes reveal a villain who sees power as a reason to rise above everyone else. Played by Willem Dafoe, Norman Osborn delivers some of Spider-Man’s most chilling lines, from his bitter response to betrayal to his attempts to turn Peter Parker against his own beliefs.

Across Spider-Man (2002) and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), the Green Goblin uses fear, pride, and cruel choices to challenge Peter’s sense of responsibility. These eight memorable quotations explore his twisted view of power, with their original film context and meanings.

Norman Osborn and the Goblin

Norman Osborn begins as a wealthy scientist and the head of Oscorp. However, an experimental formula gives him enhanced abilities while creating a dangerous split in his personality. The Green Goblin soon acts on the anger and ambition Norman struggles to control.

For the other side of their rivalry, explore our collection of Spider-Man quotes about responsibility, including the choices that guide Peter Parker when his powers put other people at risk.

1. Norman Refuses to Leave

“Out, am I?”

— Green Goblin, Spider-Man (2002), Oscorp Unity Day Festival

Norman has spent years building Oscorp, only to learn that its board plans to sell the company and remove him. Although he protests, the directors refuse to reconsider their decision.

Later, the Green Goblin interrupts the Unity Day Festival and repeats the words used to dismiss Norman before attacking the board.

His brief response carries years of pride and anger. Norman cannot accept losing control of something he created, while the Goblin turns his wounded pride into revenge. The scene also reveals how closely Norman’s ambition and his darker identity have grown together.

2. The Goblin Takes Over

“Norman’s on sabbatical, honey.”

— Green Goblin, Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), Happy Hogan’s apartment

Peter believes he can help Norman and the other displaced villains by curing the conditions that changed them. For a while, Norman appears willing to accept his help.

However, Peter’s spider-sense warns him that something is wrong. When Doctor Octopus addresses Norman, the Goblin answers instead, revealing that Norman has lost control again.

The casual humor makes the moment especially unsettling. The Goblin treats Norman as someone who can simply be pushed aside, then begins turning the other villains against Peter’s plan.

His return also exposes the danger Peter faces. He wants to save Norman, but the Goblin sees compassion as something he can exploit.

Power Without Limits

The Green Goblin believes extraordinary abilities separate certain people from the rest of humanity. Rather than accept the duties that come with strength, he views power as permission to pursue his desires.

His attempts to convince Peter reveal a conflict at the heart of their rivalry. Both possess remarkable abilities, but they disagree sharply about how those gifts should be used.

3. An Offer to Spider-Man

“You and I are not so different.”

— Green Goblin, Spider-Man (2002), rooftop confrontation

After capturing and temporarily paralyzing Spider-Man, the Goblin offers him a chance to work together. He argues that people will eventually turn against their heroes, no matter how much those heroes sacrifice.

His offer rests on the belief that exceptional people should not limit themselves for the sake of ordinary citizens.

Peter refuses because he recognizes the difference the Goblin tries to ignore. Their abilities may be similar, but their decisions set them apart.

The exchange also reveals Norman’s desire for recognition. Having faced betrayal at Oscorp, he wants Peter to share his belief that powerful individuals deserve more than the people around them.

4. Powers Without a Cure

“These are not curses. They’re gifts.”

— Green Goblin, Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), Happy Hogan’s apartment

When Peter prepares cures for the villains, the Goblin rejects the idea that their altered abilities are problems worth solving.

He believes the power they have gained should be embraced, regardless of the harm it has caused. Meanwhile, Norman has already shown that he wants freedom from the Goblin’s control.

Their opposing wishes give the scene its meaning. What the Goblin calls a gift has made Norman’s life frightening and unstable.

Peter also faces a difficult question. He has the means to help these people, but the Goblin wants him to believe that removing their dangerous powers would be an act of weakness.

The distinction between Norman and the original comic-book character is worth noting. Marvel’s official Green Goblin profile explores his comic origins and long-running conflict with Spider-Man, while this collection focuses on the film dialogue.

5. Taking Whatever He Wants

“Gods don’t have to choose. We take.”

— Green Goblin, Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), Happy Hogan’s apartment

The Goblin argues that Peter should stop allowing Aunt May’s values to influence his actions. He sees the young hero’s efforts to protect others as limits on what his powers could achieve.

His comparison to gods reveals how highly he regards strength. In his view, having extraordinary abilities means never needing to accept loss or make sacrifices.

Yet Peter’s life has taught him almost the opposite. His powers frequently force him to make difficult decisions because he knows other people will suffer if he refuses to act.

The Goblin wants Peter to abandon those concerns and embrace a life without moral limits. His argument is less about freedom than the desire to take whatever he wants, regardless of the consequences.

How the Goblin Tests Spider-Man

The Green Goblin knows that physical strength alone may not defeat Spider-Man. Instead, he tries to attack Peter through the people he loves and the beliefs that guide him.

His cruelest challenges are designed to make Peter question whether being a hero is worth the pain.

6. Striking at Peter’s Heart

“First, we attack his heart!”

— Green Goblin, Spider-Man (2002), Norman’s mirror conversation

After learning Spider-Man’s identity, Norman struggles with the idea of hurting Peter. He has grown fond of the young man and knows how much Harry values their friendship.

The Goblin, however, sees Peter’s personal relationships as weaknesses he can use.

During Norman’s conversation with his reflection, the Goblin explains that defeating Spider-Man requires more than a direct fight. He intends to cause pain by threatening the people Peter cares about.

The scene marks a darker turn in their rivalry. Peter’s secret identity no longer protects his loved ones, while Norman’s connection to the Parker family makes the threat painfully personal.

7. A Cruel Forced Choice

“We are who we choose to be…”

— Green Goblin, Spider-Man (2002), Queensboro Bridge confrontation

The Goblin forces Peter to choose between saving Mary Jane Watson and rescuing a cable car filled with children. By placing innocent lives in danger, he hopes to prove that Spider-Man cannot protect everyone.

His words carry a cruel irony. He speaks about personal choice while creating a situation in which every available decision appears to involve terrible loss.

However, Peter refuses to accept the Goblin’s terms. Rather than abandon either group, he risks his own life trying to save them all.

The moment also connects to a central theme in Spider-Man’s story. Peter cannot always control the dangers he faces, but he remains responsible for how he responds to them.

8. Calling Mercy a Weakness

“Too weak to take it!”

— Green Goblin, Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), Happy Hogan’s apartment

During their brutal fight, the Goblin mocks Peter for refusing to use his full strength without restraint. He believes Peter has enough power to take whatever he wants but lacks the will to do so.

Their clash becomes even more painful because Peter has been trying to cure Norman rather than defeat him permanently.

The Goblin sees this restraint as proof that Peter is weak. Yet Peter’s struggle reveals how difficult it can be to protect someone who is actively trying to hurt you.

The encounter also prepares the audience for Peter’s later struggle with revenge. After suffering a devastating loss, he must decide whether to follow the Goblin’s example or hold on to the values that once guided him.

Power Is Not Permission

The Green Goblin’s most memorable lines reveal a character who believes strength gives him the right to control other people. Whether he is threatening Peter’s loved ones or rejecting Norman’s chance at recovery, he treats compassion as an obstacle to getting what he wants.

Spider-Man challenges that belief through his actions. He makes mistakes and sometimes struggles with anger, but he continues trying to protect people rather than use his powers for personal gain.

Their rivalry ultimately raises a question that extends beyond superhero stories. Having the power to do something may give us the ability to make a choice, but does it give us the right to make it?
