The Monster says this after the Bride recoils from him, destroying the hope that another created being might finally understand his loneliness. He lets Henry Frankenstein and Elizabeth escape but keeps Dr. Pretorius behind as the laboratory begins to come down around them.
The line carries more sadness than threat. By this point, the Monster has been feared by strangers and manipulated by the people who made him, but the Bride’s rejection is different.
She was created specifically to be his companion, which makes her horror at him feel like the final answer to a question he has been asking throughout the film.
3. Coming for Barbra
“They’re coming to get you, Barbra.”Johnny, Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Johnny is teasing his sister in a cemetery when he says it. Then the man he is joking about actually attacks them, and the harmless sibling teasing becomes the movie’s first warning that the ordinary world has already changed.
4. A Little Mad
“We all go a little mad sometimes. Haven’t you?”Norman Bates, Psycho (1960)
Norman says this while talking with Marion Crane at the Bates Motel. His tone is so gentle that the remark can almost pass as an observation about ordinary human weakness.
Later, of course, the audience understands it differently. The brilliance of the line lies in how little Norman appears to reveal while actually revealing quite a lot.
5. Here’s Johnny
“Here’s Johnny!”Jack Torrance, The Shining (1980)
Jack is chopping through the bathroom door with an axe while Wendy tries to get away. His grin and cheerful delivery make the moment stranger because the words themselves sound playful.
The line borrows the familiar introduction once used for Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show. In another setting, it would be comic. Here, Jack turns a piece of television cheer into part of the threat, which helps explain why the moment remains so easy to imitate and so disturbing in the film itself.
6. The Exorcism Begins
“The power of Christ compels you.”Father Merrin and Father Karras, The Exorcist (1973)
The priests repeat these words during the exorcism as they confront the force possessing Regan. Repetition gives the phrase its power because the scene feels like a test of endurance rather than a single dramatic command.
Outside the film, the line has been parodied countless times. Inside the room, however, there is nothing playful about it.

7. Just Hocus Pocus
“It’s all just a bunch of hocus pocus.”Max Dennison, Hocus Pocus (1993)
Max says this inside the Sanderson sisters’ house while dismissing the local legend as superstition. Allison is cautious, Dani is uneasy, and Max is determined to prove that none of it deserves to be taken seriously.
Then he lights the Black Flame Candle.
That timing makes the quote much funnier than it seems on its own. Max does not simply doubt the story. He chooses the one action that can immediately prove him wrong, and the movie wastes very little time doing exactly that. His confidence becomes part of the joke because the audience watches it collapse almost as soon as he finishes speaking.

8. Normal Is Overrated
“Oh, being normal is vastly overrated.”Aggie Cromwell, Halloweentown (1998)
Aggie says this after Gwen argues that her children should have a normal life away from magic. To Aggie, however, “normal” means hiding something essential about the family.
The line works as a joke, but it also sums up the movie’s attitude toward being different. In Halloweentown, the supposedly strange people are often the ones most comfortable with who they are.
9. Ghost With the Most
“I’m the ghost with the most, babe.”Betelgeuse, Beetlejuice (1988)
Lydia asks Betelgeuse whether he is a ghost, and he answers as if she has just asked for his resume.
That is what makes the line so funny. Most movie ghosts are mysterious or tragic, while Betelgeuse treats being dead like a profession he is exceptionally good at. He is trying to convince Lydia to release him, so the boast is really part introduction and part sales pitch.
The joke also captures his entire personality in a few words. He is vulgar, theatrical, and completely convinced of his own charm, even when everyone around him has good reason to be suspicious.
10. Morticia’s Kind of Love
“Don’t torture yourself, Gomez. That’s my job.”Morticia Addams, The Addams Family (1991)
Gomez is upset over Fester when Morticia offers comfort in the only way that would sound affectionate in the Addams household.
The humor comes from the reversal. In most romantic scenes, “torture” would signal cruelty. Between Gomez and Morticia, it becomes flirtation because their marriage has its own perfectly consistent language.
What makes the joke especially good is Gomez’s reaction. Morticia does not need to explain herself, and he does not take offense. Their strange idea of romance is so established that the audience immediately understands what she means.
11. Put It Back
“Put the candle back.”Frederick Frankenstein, Young Frankenstein (1974)
Frederick discovers a hidden mechanism and removes the candle from its holder, only to realize that the moving bookcase has trapped him.
The words themselves are plain, but it was Gene Wilder’s delivery that did almost all the work.
He starts the scene as a confident scientist poking around a Gothic castle and ends it sounding increasingly desperate over a candle. That gap between Frederick’s dignity and the ridiculous problem in front of him is central to the movie’s humor.
It also shows why Young Frankenstein works so well as a parody. The castle, secret passage, and ominous mechanism all belong in a serious Frankenstein movie. The punchline comes from letting a very human inconvenience ruin the atmosphere.
12. The Wolfman’s Problem
“Wolfman’s got nards!”Horace, The Monster Squad (1987)
The group has been told that kicking the Wolfman between the legs will not work because a wolfman supposedly has nothing there. Horace finds out otherwise.
The joke lasts only a few seconds, but it became one of the film’s most quoted lines because it sounds exactly like something a kid would yell after making an important discovery in the middle of a monster attack. The scene never pauses to admire how absurd it is. Horace is simply reporting useful information.

13. The Boogeyman Survives

Laurie believes she has stopped Michael Myers and tries to reassure the children. Tommy answers with the warning adults have dismissed throughout the film.
The speaker matters here because this line is sometimes attributed online to Dr. Loomis. Tommy says it, and that makes the moment more effective. The child who has spent the night frightened of the boogeyman understands Michael more clearly than the adults around him.
14. A Scary Movie
“Do you like scary movies?”Ghostface, Scream (1996)
At first, the caller sounds flirtatious as Casey prepares for a quiet night at home. The question could almost be harmless small talk between two horror fans. Then the conversation changes.
What makes the line so effective is that Scream turns the viewer’s own familiarity with horror movies into part of the danger. Casey knows the genre, and Ghostface knows it too. From this point on, movie trivia is no longer entertainment. It becomes part of the threat.
15. Cole’s Secret
“I see dead people.”Cole Sear, The Sixth Sense (1999)
Cole whispers the truth to Malcolm after deciding he finally trusts him enough to explain what has been happening.

16. Don’t Fall Asleep

20. We Are the Weirdos
“We are the weirdos, mister.”Nancy Downs, The Craft (1996)

That confidence helped the line outlive the scene because it works even for people who have never seen the movie. However, The Craft later complicates the idea of outsider power, especially as Nancy’s confidence becomes harder to separate from her anger.
21. A Little Witch

People often share this line as though Emily says it because the sentiment fits her story so well. In the scene, however, Barkis is the speaker. And that fact changes the tone completely.
